What is Terra Classic (LUNC)?

Luna Classic (LUNC) is the original native token of the Terra blockchain, initially launched in August 2018. LUNC existed before the creation of the new chain, which is now known as Terra (LUNA), and it is built upon the original code of the Terra ecosystem.

The primary role of the native LUNC token was to stabilize the price of the algorithmic stablecoin, UST (TerraUSD). UST’s value was supposed to be maintained at parity with the US dollar by adjusting the supply of UST through minting and burning UST tokens based on market demand. However, in May 2022, UST lost its peg to the US dollar. This led to significant issues, including the algorithm generating trillions of LUNA tokens, resulting in a hyperinflationary spiral that severely devalued the original LUNA token by 99%.

To address these challenges, the Terra Ecosystem Revival Plan 2 was introduced. This plan involved a blockchain fork, resulting in the creation of a new chain within the Terra ecosystem while preserving the existing version.

Under this recovery plan, the original chain and its associated token were rebranded as Terra Classic (LUNC). Simultaneously, a new version of the LUNA token was created and distributed to existing holders of LUNA and UST before the debugging and subsequent market crash occurred.
