BTC and USDT Accepted To Pay For Tax and Other Municipal Services in the City of Lugano

  • The City of Lugano announced today the inclusion of cryptocurrencies as an accepted means of payment for tax invoices.
  • BTC and USDT are now part of Lugano’s payment options through Bitcoin Suisse.
  • This move is part of the city’s forward-thinking initiative known as Plan B.

The City of Lugano announced today the inclusion of cryptocurrencies as an accepted means of payment for tax invoices and all other community fees. Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT) are now part of Lugano’s payment options, providing citizens and businesses with a flexible and automated solution through Bitcoin Suisse.

As of today, the City of Lugano will accept Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT) for any invoice, regardless of its nature or the amount invoiced. This marks a significant departure from the previous practice, where cryptocurrency payments were limited to transactions made on the City’s online portal. Lugano’s decision to extend this option to all its invoices reflects a progressive approach to handling city-related expenses.

Lugano’s move positions it as one of the first cities globally to accept Bitcoin and Tether for all transactions, aligning with the city’s forward-thinking initiative known as Plan B. Developed in collaboration with Tether, Plan B leverages Bitcoin technology to transform Lugano’s financial system, integrating blockchain and Bitcoin into various aspects of daily life.

Supporting Lugano in its Plan B is Bitcoin Suisse, the technical infrastructure provider for crypto payments. Bitcoin Suisse facilitates the integrated payment solution, streamlining tax collection and other municipal service payments. The Swiss QR-Bill, a key component of the process, allows citizens and companies to scan the QR code on their invoices and seamlessly complete payments using their preferred cryptocurrency and mobile wallet.

Armin Schmid, Chief Product Officer at Bitcoin Suisse, expressed enthusiasm about supporting Lugano’s financial transformation, stating, “We are delighted to support the City of Lugano in accelerating the use of Bitcoin technology as the foundation to transform the city’s financial infrastructure.”

Lugano joins the ranks of Swiss municipalities embracing cryptocurrency payments, following the successful implementations in the City of Zug, the Canton of Zug, and the municipality of Zermatt. This move positions Lugano at the forefront of cities embracing the future of finance, offering citizens and businesses a modern and efficient alternative for handling financial transactions.
